Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
