The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
