Major Lessons after the Heineken Champions Cup's Initial Set of Fixtures

Now that the opening salvo of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we examine the primary lessons highlighted by the fixtures.

French dominance has defined the competition in the past few campaigns, with the past five winners all hailing from France's Top 14. However, the initial stage showcased a number of statement victories from potential challengers.

Bordeaux Seem Ready to Retain Their Crown

Current holders Bordeaux Begles were utterly dominant in Europe the previous campaign, overpowering Toulouse in the last four and subsequently Northampton in the showpiece.

Positioned sixth in the domestic standings, some have suggested about their chances of defending the accomplishment now. However, in the first round, Bordeaux served notice that they are more than capable of achieving back-to-back titles with a free-flowing away victory in South Africa.

Handed a tough assignment at a hostile venue against a formidable Bulls side featuring talents like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they were behind 33-22 at the break.

However, as champions do, they displayed their class in the second half, storming back to secure a 46-33 victory – shutting out the Bulls without a point after the interval.

France international phenoms Damian Penaud and World Player of the Year nominee Louis Bielle-Biarrey were among the try-scorers. Any team with such firepower on the edges has a chance against any competition.

Impressive Bath Appear Equipped of A Deep Run

Bath's only triumph in the Champions Cup was almost a generation ago. Since that time, they have probably never been more prepared to add a second star.

The current English champions are top of the pile in the league after six games and will be looking to translate that form into the Champions Cup – especially after a surprise group-stage exit in the last campaign.

Johann van Graan's men looked a very complete and balanced unit in their 40-14 victory against Munster, who are third in the URC.

They combine offensive flair – earning the try-scoring point in under 20 minutes at the Rec – with resolute defending, keeping their opponents at arm's length when they looked like mounting a fightback.

With stars such as Finn Russell and Ben Spencer directing play and quality reserves all over the roster, they are surely genuine challengers for a maiden Champions Cup since 1998.

Bath's pivotal moment in the group stage a year ago came in the following week, an agonising 22-21 loss at Benetton with a changed side.

After winning a domestic championship under their belt and leading in England once more, Van Graan could be inclined to concentrate more effort on the Champions Cup now.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Tough Start

You will find strong teams throughout the draw, but Pool One seems destined to be one of the tightest.

In the competition's present structure, a lot is emphasized regarding victories on your own turf, which is why Glasgow's away victory at Sale on Friday evening might just prove crucial.

The Glasgow Warriors were two scores behind after 20 minutes but responded with character, and two tries early in the second period gave them a precious bonus-point win.

With this result, they gave their prospects of qualification a major lift and, in turn, handed a significant setback to their opponents.

With the red and blacks – imperious 56-19 conquerors of the Sharks – and Saracens, who comfortably defeated Clermont, in the same section, we can expect high-stakes drama.

And what of Glasgow's Scottish counterparts Edinburgh? They turned in one of their finest displays in Europe in a long time to stun three-time winners Toulon 33-20, on a fine weekend for the Scottish game.

Will Ioane Be the Key Addition of the Leinster Quest?

Should you pick one side you would predict to be challenging at the business end of the Champions Cup, it would be four-time winners Leinster.

But in recent seasons it hasn't gone to plan, as they have promised much but delivered little. Beaten finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites a year ago after building on a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 win over Glasgow in the quarter-final.

It was believed that Kiwi international Jordie Barrett would be the missing ingredient to secure the title, but they were ambushed and endured a stunning upset to Northampton Saints in the semi.

Now they are testing another New Zealand import, this time with Rieko Ioane, who registered a scoring pass on his debut in Saturday's 45-28 success against Harlequins.

Could Ioane be the player to return the cup to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Appear Equipped to Compete

From the moment the SA franchises became part of the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the deepest run achieved is the last eight, and in the last campaign not a single one succeeded in getting out of the group stage, with several squads not at full strength selected.

Could this be the season that turns around? The Stormers are first in the URC and began their continental journey with a 26-17 away win at Bayonne on Friday.

The reactions after the game were positive too, with individuals involved speaking of their aspirations, and the caliber of stars Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse not involved for the opening victory.

The Stormers look the strongest candidate for a South African side to have a long run in the event, but write off the Sharks and Bulls, who were defeated in the opening round but did play formidable opponents respectively.

Saints and Pau Produce a Memorable Match

There were a few contenders for match of the round, and this one was a leading candidate.

Pau have been having a brilliant season, guided by Pumas Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and veteran playmaker Dan Robson.

They are right now in second place in the Top 14 and the atmosphere was electric at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
