British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
